Ann WereWales first Green Party Mayor Ann Were who was elected in Monmouth in May 2009 has committed to cutting her personal carbon emissions as part of the 10:10 climate change campaign at the Green Party conference in Brighton today. She also became Wales' first female leader of a political party (Wales Green Party) between 2006 and 2007. Signing up to the 10:10 climate change campaign commits people to making a reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in 2010.

The current Wales Green Party Leader, Jake Griffiths, and members of the Wales Green Party Council - which is meeting at the Green Party conference - committed to the 10:10 climate change campaign.

Ann Were, Wales Green Party Mayor of Monmouth, said: "I think the 10:10 climate commitment is excellent and couldn't have come at a more important time because it focuses people's minds on what they can do personally. I urge people to sign up and I will be encouraging people in Monmouth to make the commitment over the coming months."

Jake Griffiths, leader of the Wales Green Party and General Election Candidate for Cardiff West, said: "I fully support this campaign. Climate change is of such importance that it cannot just be left to governments to tackle - a large number of people making a personal commitment to save 10% can have a huge impact. Making such a commitment will not only bring environmental benefits but also bring financial savings which is really important to the current economic down turn which is affecting us all. To date there has been a lot of hot air from the Welsh Assembly on climate change but little reduction in the emissions that are urgently required - I urge the other party leaders in Wales to commit to 10:10.

Sam Coates, Wales Green Party General Election Candidate for Cardiff Central, said:

"This exciting campaign could not have cone at a better time. It is vital that a strong climate deal is secured at Copenhagen in December and by signing up to 10:10, we can all make it very clear to government that people in Wales want action. It's important for individuals to make a personal commitment so we can confront the government and say "the people are doing their bit, but now it's up to the government to help put this country on the path to a low-carbon future".
