Save Cardiff Central say Greens
Cardiff Central bus station has served the people of Cardiff since it opened in 1954, and provided an easy way to connect between local and national bus services along with the adjoining railway station. The main terminus building was demolished in 2008, and since then a large number of services have been redirected to terminate at other parts of the city centre.
It is now so hard to connect between services that the council are even forced to offer a free bus to move around the city centre. This wasn't previously needed and is not a good solution as bus users now have to use three buses to make a journey which used to be possible in two.
Matthew Townsend, Green Party candidate for Cardiff South and Penarth in the coming general election said: "There is a lack of information on the Council and Cardiff Bus websites about what the long term plan is here. If you go to other cities such as Bristol which lack an integrated Central station, changing between services is a constant source of frustration to public transport users. Cardiff was fortunate enough to have a public transport hub which was convenient and easy to use. The people of Cardiff trusted this Plaid/Lib Dem council to look after the city which elected them, and instead they have destroyed the effectiveness of the peoples main transport facility which should instead have been upgraded and modernised."
"Buses often now stand for up to 10 minutes by John Lewis with their engines running, making journey times longer and polluting the air. Green Party members have also complained about the environment around the John Lewis bus stops not being a nice place to wait for buses, especially in the evenings."
"This is not a campaign which should only concern residents of Cardiff. if councils think they can make such drastic changes to public transport without proper public consultation this could be repeated anywhere else in the country. This is why Cardiff and Vale Green Party have launched a campaign website, an e-petition which will be taken to Downing Street and a Facebook group."
