Wales Green Party Plaid Werdd Cymru

A load of Pollocks say the Greens

A 21st century interpretation of the famed American impressionist Jackson Pollock is to be created by children and Wales Green Party European list candidate Jake Griffiths today (29th of May) at the Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff to highlight what the Wales Green Party sees as the uncoordinated and contradictory nature of the policies of the main political parties prior to the European elections on the 4th of June.

Jake Griffiths, Wales Green Party Leader and Lead Green Party List candidate, said: "People often find it hard to understand a Jackson Pollock painting and that is also increasingly the case with the contradictory policy decisions being made in Wales and the UK. With the economic crisis and threat of climate change there needs to be a coherent vision for the future but this is sadly not being provided by the main political parties in Wales."

"We are being told to use our cars less but the Assembly Labour and Plaid leaders are committed to building a new £1-billion motorway around Newport. Labour and Plaid leaders are supporting a new nuclear power station on Anglesey whilst producing reports saying Wales can generate all its electricity from green renewable energy. Assembly finance is to be given to a privatised military training academy, part funded by an international arms manufacturer, in South Wales which will irrevocably link Wales to overseas military conflicts. There are huge opportunities to reduce our domestic energy bills by improving the energy efficiency levels in our homes but current Government policies mean improvements are being made at a snails pace."

"Children are involved with making this painting because it is their future we are talking about. It's a bit of fun over the half-term holiday but with a very serious message."

The painting will be started at 10am and be finished by 11am and will take place at the Chapter Arts Centre in Canton, Cardiff.

Jake Griffiths continued: "After 12 years of Labour government in London and now a Labour/Plaid government in Cardiff, there is very little evidence of achievement on environmental issues - opportunities have not been grasped. Wales and the UK still languish far behind the best in Europe, producing less renewable energy, more waste, fewer energy efficient buildings, and less use of greener modes of transport such as cycling and public transport."

Green Party policies provide an opportunity to help fight the recession and meet pressing environmental targets. The Wales Green Party estimate that 50,000 green jobs could be created in Wales alone in renewable energy, energy efficiency and public transport improvements; however, joined up thinking is needed if these jobs are to be realised. The Assembly has indicated that money is going to be in short supply over coming years because of the recession. The money that is available for investment can only be spent once and needs to be spent wisely on projects that work towards meeting environmental targets, such as reducing carbon dioxide, while creating employment.
