BNP Black Welshman Comments Outrageous say Greens
Jake Griffiths, Wales Green Party Leader, has expressed outrage at comments made by BNP Leader Nick Griffin who claimed there was "no such thing as a black Welshman". Nick Griffin made his comments while speaking on a Channel 4 programme about the Equality and Human Rights Commission call for the BNP to change its constitution to ensure that it did not discriminate against people on grounds of race.
Jake Griffiths said: "Nick Griffins comments are not only outrageous but also plan wrong however they cannot be just dismissed because of the wide publicity has racist comments are receiving."
He continued: "Somebody's feeling of Welsh or Britishness is personal to them and is not dependent on another's views on skin colour, ethnic background, language spoken or religion. Wales today is an ethnically mixed society which continues to have a history of welcoming people from different backgrounds from around the world who have made a significant contribution to Welsh society."
"The Wales Green Party stands for equality, fairness in society and solidarity - the exact opposite of the racist, homophobic fascist views espoused by the BNP. We are united with others from across the political spectrum and society as a whole in confronting such bigoted views wherever they are made or in whatever context."
"While we need to confront the BNP and their racist policies - and sadly they now a political platform following the election of two MEPs in England - however we have to remember that they still have only a very low level of support with only a small minority of people in Wales supporting their racist views. They are going to continue to make these outrageous comments and receive the oxygen of publicity which they so crave."
