Crippling increases in energy prices predicted following decades of failed energy policies

Following predictions of crippling increases in energy prices by Ofgem, Wales Green Party Leader Jake Griffiths, has called for the Governments in Cardiff and London to prioritise improvements in energy efficiency and generation of renewable energy. The Ofgem report predicts a 60% increase in the price of gas over the next decade, an energy gap with demand starting to outstrip supply, and possible power cuts.

Jake Griffiths, Wales Green Party Leader and parliamentary candidate for Cardiff West said: "Sadly, both Labour and Conservative Parties have been blinded by the extreme wealth generated by bankers and city financiers putting their faith in open unregulated markets. Our economy has fallen deeper into recession because of this. This blind faith in unregulated open markets has been carried over into energy policy and we are now seeing the results with higher prices and energy insecurity."

"It has also led to a failure to invest in the green technologies which are so urgently needed if are to move to a low carbon future and pull the economy out of recession. The Green Party has estimated that 50,000 jobs could be created in Wales if we develop the sustainable energy technologies that are needed to build a low carbon future."

"When countries with more balanced economies and smaller financial sectors start to move out of recession before us there is likely to be a significant increase in energy prices. This is going to hit the UK economy particularly badly because of our over-reliance on energy imports based on fossil fuels, very low levels of renewable energy generation and inefficient use of energy."

"The high energy prices are going to hit the poorest particularly hard, however the effects are going to be felt across society. The Government needs to move quickly to improve energy efficiency levels and the use of renewable energy to help reduce the impact of the higher energy prices."
