Wales Green Party Plaid Werdd Cymru

Wales Green Party Leader backs Vestas workers in Cardiff and criticizes Government’s abysmal failure to support a green future for Britain.

The Leader of the Wales Green Party, Jake Griffiths, is today going to speak in support of Vestas workers at the Save Vestas Jobs! Save the Planet rally in Cardiff. The rally is part of a UK wide series of events organised in support of the 625 workers and against the closure of the Vestas factory - the UKs only large wind turbine manufacturing factory - on the Isle of Wight. Wind turbine manufacture is going to be a crucial sector of industry which will need to expand significantly if Britain is going to be part of the green technological revolution essential for tackling the threat of climate change. The Wales Green Party estimate around 50,000 new jobs could be created in Wales by developing green technologies - such as wind turbine manufacture.

The Rally in Cardiff will be at the Nye Bevan Statue on Queen Street, between 5-6:30pm and is supported by the Wales Green Party, Cardiff RMT, PCS Wales, CACC, Leanne Wood AM, Climate Camp Cymru and World Development Movement.

Jake Griffiths, Wales Green Party Leader and candidate for Cardiff West general election constituency, said: "The loss of these 625 jobs is a personal tragedy for Vestas workers and their families during the worst recession Britain has seen since the depression. The problems Vestas workers face is symptomatic of the Governments failure to develop the green revolution in Britain which is so urgently required if we are going to move to a zero carbon future."

He continued: "Britain has a terrible record, being the poor man of Europe behind Luxembourg and Malta, in the generation of renewable energy while having one of the best renewable potentials. It is little short of a disgrace that with the Labour Party being in power for 12 years we find ourselves so far behind in developing the green technology essential for securing a sustainable low carbon future for Britain. Current estimates suggest that Britain is unlikely to meet its 15% target by 2020 while Sweden and Denmark are well on the way to their respective targets of 49% and 30%."

"The Wales Green Party has estimated that 50,000 jobs could be created across Wales - and over a million across the UK - if a proper strategy was put in place for developing the green technologies which are so urgently required to secure our energy future and combat the serious threat of climate change."
